Resumen

This paper assesses the economic weight, carbon profile, and import dependence of seventeen strategic industry groups in Spain using EXIOBASE 3.10.1, an environmentally extended multi-regional input-output database covering 49 regions and 163 industries, for the period 2019-2022. We map 127 out of 163 sectors from EXIOBASE into 17 broader sectors.

Empirically, the seventeen groups account for roughly 27 percent of Spanish gross value added and 21 percent of employment. On an identical sector basket, Spain’s carbon intensity of output (0.47 kg CO₂e per euro) exceeds that of Germany (0.34), France (0.30), and the EU-27 average (0.40), with the gap concentrated in electricity generation, cement, ceramics, and agri-food.

Scope 3 emissions dominate in 13 of 16 measurable groups and carry 58 percent of the basket’s footprint. Approximately 199 billion euro of the groups’ value added is ultimately absorbed abroad, with revealed comparative advantage concentrated in construction, the automotive industry, and agri-food.

Composite supply-risk rankings are shown to be highly sensitive to indicator weights, which cautions against point rankings in policy use.
