alinnea has launched its Working Group on Energy Storage and Electricity System Flexibility with the first session of a multi-stakeholder dialogue process aimed at developing strategic recommendations to accelerate deployment and strengthen industrial competitiveness.

This first meeting, part of a three-session cycle, brought together representatives from the industrial, energy and financial sectors, alongside public administrations, social partners and academia, to assess the main challenges facing the deployment of energy storage in Spain.

In a context of increasing electrification of the economy and growing penetration of renewable energy, energy storage and system flexibility are emerging as structural elements to ensure security of supply, optimise system performance and advance industrial decarbonisation.

The session focused on analysing the current regulatory framework and its ability to integrate storage and flexibility as core pillars of the electricity system. Key topics included grid access and connection, new flexibility models, energy planning and its implications for industrial competitiveness, as well as challenges related to cybersecurity and system resilience.

The working group responds to a priority identified by alinnea in the field of industrial decarbonisation: the need to overcome technological, regulatory and financial barriers that are currently limiting the deployment of energy storage. As outlined in its background document, the availability of storage and flexibility solutions is critical to ensuring a stable, flexible and cost-competitive electricity supply for industry.

Over the coming sessions, the group will further explore technological, territorial and financial dimensions, with the aim of building an evidence base and formulating recommendations to inform public policy design, investment decisions and the development of industrial capabilities in this area.

Through this initiative, alinnea reinforces its role as a platform for dialogue and knowledge generation, contributing to the development of solutions that support a more flexible electricity system and a decarbonised, competitive and resilient industry.
