This Report published by alinnea, analyses the role of this energy carrier in climate action and industrial transformation. It examines the European and national strategic and regulatory frameworks, Spain’s capabilities, and opportunities to integrate renewable hydrogen into major industrial hubs.
One of its central conclusions is the need to combine direct electrification with green hydrogen, prioritising each option according to its efficiency and technical and economic feasibility. The report highlights the value of renewable hydrogen in processes that are difficult to electrify and in activities that use it as a feedstock or chemical agent, such as fertiliser production, refining and certain steelmaking processes.
The analysis also addresses the barriers affecting its deployment: the cost gap with fossil-based hydrogen, the need to secure stable demand, storage and transport challenges, regulatory certainty and social acceptance. Drawing on these findings, it provides guidance on coordinating industrial policy, energy planning and regional development so that green hydrogen can help reduce emissions and strengthen the competitiveness of Spanish industry.
