Water resources are fundamental to Spain’s economy, society and ecosystems. Water underpins agricultural and food production, provides a stable and universal supply to a population of just over 49 million people and to a flow of 94 million international visitors, and sustains unique ecosystems ranging from coastal wetlands to high-mountain rivers, among many other uses.

The report analyses the institutional and economic framework for water management in Spain, the research needs required to address climate change from this perspective, and innovative solutions—technological, nature-based and institutional—that can strengthen water governance in the country.
